        School of Public Health is an integral part of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine is one of Ministry of Education’s esteemed “Project 211” and “Project 985” institutes. Its predecessor, Shanghai Second Medical University, was established in 1952 by merging St John's University School of Medicine, Aurora University School of Medicine and Tong De School of Medicine.

        The School of Public Health was established on April 22nd, 2002, by merging Shanghai Second Medical University’s Department of Health Management and Preventive Medicine, and Department of Basic Medicine. In 2005, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai Second Medical University officially merged, and this integrated version was renamed Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. In June 2012, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine and the Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention formally signed a contract to jointly build Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Public Health.

        School of Public Health has five departments and one lab center: Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Department of Environment and Health, Department of Social Medicine and Health Protection, Department of Community Health& Behavioral Medicine / Department of Child Health and Maternity and Child Care, Department of Food Safety and Toxicology, and the Public Health Lab Center. The School of Public Health has several degree programs including: a First-level Discipline PhD in Preventive Medicine and Public Health, two First-level Master’s Degrees in Non-profit Management and Preventive Medicine, six Second-level Discipline Master’s Degrees and MPH Professional Degrees in Epidemiology and Health Statistics, Occupational and Environmental Health, Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Maternal and Child Health, Hygiene Toxicology and Social Medicine, and Health Service Management. All of the above degrees have helped gradually develop a multi-tiered school structure, consisting of full-time Undergraduate, Masters in Science, Professional Masters, PhD and Post Doctorate programs.

        Leveraging the opportunity brought forth by School of Medicine’s aims to develop public health and preventive care disciplines, and the construction of Hong Qiao International Institute of Medicine, the School of Public Health has been constructed as a link between School of Medicine and Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control. School of Public Health gives great impetus to in-depth cooperation with all major hospitals and Health Development Planning Commissions of counties on the outskirts. Adhering to principles of “Resource Sharing, Complementary Advantages, Close Cooperation and Common Development”, with primary focus on “Reform and Innovation, and Scientific Development”, School of Public Health has pushed itself to change scientific research, teaching and personnel training models. It has stepped up introduction and cultivation of high-quality and innovative talents, constructs special zone of discipline-based creative talents . It is focused on developing a One Center, One Platform and One Base model, i.e., Nutrition and Food Safety Collaborative Innovation Center, Multi-center Clinical Research Platform and Outstanding Public Health Talents Training Base.It also promotes interdisciplinary studies, and cultivates new growth in disciplines which have helped it make breakthroughs in a number of fields. School of Public Health aims to become a new-generation public health talent training base with a global perspective, a research base for scientific discovery and knowledge innovation, a preventive medicine and clinical medicine collaborative innovation research base, and a public health care base, which is open to the world..
